VOLUNTEERS are needed for charity's mission to support those with memory loss.
Set up by Alzheimer’s Society, Side by Side is a scheme that matches volunteers with people living with dementia.
The initiative prevents those with the condition from feeling lonely or isolated, by pairing them with a volunteer who keeps them a happy and active member of the community, while ensuring they continue doing the things they love.
Already a volunteer for the service, 61-year-old Nigel said: "I signed up as a Side by Side volunteer with Alzheimer’s Society because I really enjoy working with people and wanted to continue to do so.
“I would thoroughly recommend anyone to volunteer as it is both very enjoyable and extremely rewarding to be able to get to know a person and help them to maintain activities of their choice in the community.”
Diane Jenkins, Alzheimer’s Society Side by Side coordinator for Wiltshire said: “Loneliness is a real problem for people with dementia, yet we know that one of the most important things for those affected is to remain part of their community and continue to do the things they love – from badminton to ballroom dancing, we are encouraging people to do more with Side by Side."
