A MAN was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash on the A345 this afternoon. 

Officers were called to the scene just 350 metres north of the junction with Winterslow Road at approximately midday today. 

A man in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene and police are in the process of informing his next of kin. 

The road will remain closed while a collision investigation takes place.

The collision involved two vehicles – a Ford Focus and a Citroen DS4. 

The driver of the Ford Focus was travelling northbound along the A345 from High Post towards Amesbury, when, for reasons unknown at this time, collided with the Citroen which was traveling in the opposite direction. 

The three occupants of the Citroen sustained minor injuries.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, who has not already spoken to police, to call 101 and quote log number 94 of 2 November. 

A Tweet from Salisbury Reds bus service said: "#TravelAlert UPDATE A345 - Wiltshire Police have informed us the accident is very serious and potentially fatal, meaning the road could be closed for some time. "Expecting delays on the X4, X5 and Activ8 services ^SR"

A statement from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to the A345 at Stock Bottom at 11.52am for a two vehicle collision, two fire engines attended from Amesbury and Salisbury, and two casualties were released from the vehicles into the care of paramedics. Our stop came at 12.20pm."

A statement from the ambulance service said: "We were called at 11:50 to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We attended with an air ambulance, an operations officer, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance."
