COMMUNITIES across Salisbury and the New Forest will be falling silent to honour soldiers that have lost their lives in conflicts since the First World War, as this year marks its centenary.

Royal British Legion branches. parish councils, churches and communities in the area have organised a number of remembrance services on Sunday, (Armistice Day), November 11, and over the coming week:

Salisbury

  • Sunday, November 11. Salisbury’s annual Remembrance Service will take place in the Guildhall Square from 11am. The parade to the square will be followed by two minutes silence and the laying of the wreaths.
  • A Salisbury Remembrance exhibition is taking place in the Guildhall until November 11.
  • Saturday, November 10. The Centenary of the Armistice, a tribute in words and music, will take place at St Thomas’s Church. It will feature songs associated with the First World War, and readings. Starts 12.15pm.

Amesbury and villages

(All taking place on Remembrance Sunday, November 11)

  • A parade will march from the Amesbury Cross, to St Mary and St Melor Abbey Church from 10.30am. The Mayor of Amesbury and a senior officer will take the salute as the parade marches to the churchyard where the Remembrance Service will be held at the War Memorial. 
  • St Leonard’s Church, Bulford.10.15am Remembrance Service.
  • All Saints Church, Durrington.10.45am at War Memorial, then onto Church for Remembrance Service.
  • All Saints Church, Enford. 9am, outdoor service of Remembrance at the Church Lytchgate.
  • St Michael and All Angels Church, Figheldean. 10.30am, then 11am at War Memorial.
  • All Saints Church, Fittleton. 6pm Remembrance Evensong .
  • St Mary Church, Milston. 10.45am Remembrance Service.
  • All Saints Church, Netheravon. 10.20am at War Memorial, 10.45am Service of Remembrance at church.

New Forest

(All taking place on Remembrance Sunday, November 11)

  • St Mary’s Church Fordingbridge, starts at 9.50am. Two minutes silence outdoors at 10.50am. Prayers for peace at 6.30pm.
  • Ringwood Parish Church, Remembrance Service and silence from 10.50am.
  • Redlynch WI meet at Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls Village Hall at 9.30am for a march ending St Mary’s Church, Lover, for 10.45am service of Remembrance.

Downton

  • Saturday, November 10. Commemoration of 100 years since the end of the war. Beacon, 6pm.
  • Sunday, November 11. Remembrance march and service, Memorial Hall, 10am. Remembrance concert by Downton Band, Memorial Hall, 6pm.

Quidhampton

  • Sunday, November 11. Starts 10.15am in Quidhampton Village Hall.
