SALISBURY'S Mothercare store could become a 24-hour gym if new plans are approved.

An application has been submitted for the store, on Bourne Retail Park, Southampton Road, by fitness chain PureGym.

The plans include a main gym area, studio, free weights area, spin area, changing facilities and showers.

In a statement, PureGym said: "By expanding the range of facilities available to employees within the surrounding industrial area, the proposed development will help to make this a more attractive location for both employees and employers."

Opening the gym would also create up to 15 jobs (two full-time and 13 part-time).

The statement said PureGym had also considered locations including former offices on Castle Street and the current New Look building in the High Street.

It would be the tenth gym to open in Salisbury.

Mothercare, a retailer focusing on expectant mothers, babies and young children, announced it would be closing 50 stores earlier this year, as the business was in an "unsustainable position".
