EARLIER this month, Salisbury Soroptimist club hosted a successful charity quiz night. The event was held at St Elizabeth Hall with over 80 people in 15 teams competing to win!

Salisbury Journal’s Annie Riddle asked the questions which covered topics including TV, Salisbury connections, First World War, film, vocalists, authors and inspirational women.

The winning team, ‘Five Game Birds and Cock!’, played their joker at just the right moment to steal a last minute victory from their rivals. Thanks to the generous donations of prizes from many local businesses, a raffle raised £350 on the night. Donors included Salisbury Escape Rooms, Salisbury Playhouse, Dinghams, The Chapter House, The Rai D’Or, Trinity Rooms, Neals Yard, Cambridge Wines, Chas Baker, Britz Fish & Chips, Downton Brewery, Hopback Brewery and The Red Lion Hotel.

The event raised a total £1,160 which will be shared between two local good causes. £870 will be given to Salisbury Women’s Refuge to create a new travel fund which will be used by residents needing to travel to court cases in other parts of the country. £290 will be given to EdUKaid, a charity which supports the delivery of education in parts of rural Tanzania – the donation will be used to buy sewing machines as part of a new project to provide local women with the skills and equipment they need to create a source of cash income. Salisbury Soroptimists is a new club for women – it is part of an international organisation which has the aim of the improving the lives of women and girls both locally, and abroad.

The club has an ongoing supportive relationship with Salisbury Women’s Refuge and is running a range of other local projects, including a STEM challenge to encourage local school girls to consider science and engineering based career options.
