A MAN arrested in a major counter terrorism operation in the region on Tuesday is still being held by police after they were granted more time for questioning.

Counter Terrorism Policing North East went to court yesterday to get a seven day extension to question the suspect following his arrest in Newcastle.

The team was granted a warrant of further detention to hold the 33-year-old, who lives in Newcastle.

They now have until Tuesday, December 18 to charge or release him or apply for an additional extension.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and was taken taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning.

Northumbria Police said it is working closely with their partners and communities to reassure local people and protect the public.

Searches continue at the address in Arthur’s Hill at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
