DOGS Trust Salisbury has celebrated a “cracking year” for finding new homes for its it homeless hounds.

It has been a record-breaking 2018 for the Newton Tony-based centre who have rehomed 63 more dogs than 2017, including long-term residents Cody, Chutney, Bailey and Marley who had collectively been at the rehoming centre for eight years.

To date, 475 dogs at the centre have gone off to new homes compared to 408 last year.

Jacinta Lye, the rehoming centre manager at Dogs Trust Salisbury, said: “It’s been a cracking year for us and our rehoming success was helped by all the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers and their passion to find loving homes for the dogs in our care. We’re really excited to see what 2019 brings – and we’re going to pull out even more stops to rehome even more dogs next year.”

The centre also saw a 10 per cent increase in the number of dogs rehomed from its Home From Home foster scheme and 24 members of the dog-loving public signed up to become foster carers, opening up their homes to dogs in need while they wait to be adopted.

The team at Dogs Trust Salisbury are keen to remind people that there are still lots of dogs waiting for their special someone and are encouraging dog lovers to “adopt-not-shop” if they are thinking of adding a four-legged friend to their home in 2019.

Jacinta said: “We have around 50 dogs all looking for a new family. Some of them have been with us a little while now so we all have our fingers crossed that 2019 will be the year for them.”

This year, the centre also opened its specialist training and behaviour facility, Stepping Stones, which offers an alternative to traditional kennel life and helps to equip dogs who need extra care and more bespoke behaviour and training sessions to enable them to find a home.

Since opening, staff have so far rehomed 13 dogs from the state-of-the-art facility including Marley who had been at the centre for two-and-a-half years.
