MISS Marple, The Queen and Margaret Thatcher take centre stage in Salisbury Playhouse’s spring season. 

Agatha Cristie’s The Mirror Crack’d , a reimagining of a traditional “whodunit “ which has been adapted by Rachel Wagstaff (Birdsong) and directed by Melly Still (The Lovely Bones) is on the Main Stage from February 15-March 9.

It is a co-production with Wales Millennium Centre as well as working closely with the Agatha Christie Estate.

Moira Buffini’s Handbagged, which runs from April 4-20, is a satirical play about the Queen’s relationship with Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

It is co-produced with York Theatre Royal and the Oldham Coliseum, and directed by Wiltshire Creative associate director Jo Newman.

Wiltshire Creative artistic director Gareth Machin said: “Our second season of work as Wiltshire Creative demonstrates once more the vitality and vibrancy of a cultural offer which annually draws tens of thousands of visitors into Salisbury.”

The new season also brings touring productions to the Playhouse, including the first visit of BalletBoyz (March 12-13) to the city; Miles Jupp in The Life I lead (March 14-16), which celebrates the life of actor David Tomlinson, who was known for playing George Banks in Mary Poppins; and Stephen Tompkinson in Willie Russell’s Educating Rita (June 17-22). 

There is also Out of Joint’s The Remains of the Day (April 30-May 11), adapted for the stage by Salisbury’s Barney Norris. 

The eight annual Fest West returns from February 14-March 2 to celebrate the best theatre, dance, circus, and film from the South West. 

And in The Salberg, Living Spit return with Giants of Science. There is also The Stranger on the Bridge, the true life story of Jonny Benjamin; and a musical adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button from Jethro Compton in association with Hall for Cornwall.

The new season for Wiltshire Creative was unveiled to members during a special event on Saturday.
