SALISBURY Plain Defence Infrastructure Organisation archaeologist, Richard Osgood is a finalist in the Archaeologist of the Year for his work with Operation Nightingale – an initiative that uses archaeological fieldwork to aid the recovery of wounded veterans.
Born in Wiltshire, Richard was interested in history and archaeology from an early age and has excavated ancient and more recent artefacts from across Salisbury Plain with his favourite site Barrow Clump which I reported on last year. Operation Nightingale began in 2011 with a group of soldiers from The Rifles and has grown from strength to strength. Across the Plain, Richard is responsible for some 800 scheduled monuments and parts of ten World Heritage Sites.
