THE annual Big Sleep in Salisbury’s Cathedral Cloisters organised by the Alabare to raise awareness of homelessness has been postponed because of the conditions.

The event was due to take place this evening.

The charity made the announcement on Twitter this morning saying: “Please be aware due to health and safety conditions travelling to and from Salisbury Cathedral, Alabare has taken the decision to postpone the Big Sleep for Friday, the 1st of February based on the weather conditions known.

A second tweet added: “While we frequently sleep rough at the event in lower temperatures, we are concerned for people safety traffic to and from the venue.”

The decision will have come as a disappointment to many of those participating in what Alabare regard as its flagship event and at least one of those intending to take part says she will go it alone.

Councillor Amanda Foster said in reply: “I am personally going to set up in my garden and take pictures and keep you posted! Least I can do.....”

Alabare use the event to highlight the hardship of the homeless and it is their way of taking a stand against it.

On their website it says: “By sleeping out, participants will raise awareness of those forced to call the streets home and also raise much needed funds.”

Alabare, who raise cash through sponsorship of individuals say they will rearrange the event when the weather improves. “Once a postponement date has been agreed we will invite everyone to join us once again for the key fundraising event”

Its website states: “If you have any questions about the event or raising sponsorship, please email fundraising@alabare.co.uk .Thank you so much for helping us to end homelessness."
