A NEW manager has taken over a museum in the heart of Salisbury.

The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum, also known as The Wardrobe, has a history of being owned by retired military officers since its opening, and has now been handed to Tony Field.

The new owner accepted the keys in January from former manager and curator, Simon Cook, and his role officially began when the museum reopened on Monday (February 4).

Tony described the building in the Close as "one of the many gems of our beautiful city", adding: "[The museum] is a tale of valour as well as humility of soldiers who have taken up arms to defend our nation and carry out the overseas business of Kings, Queens and governments through the ages."

From galleries to historic artefacts, the museum takes visitors back in time to 1748, and will show visitors exhibits throughout time leading right up to the current regiment, The Rifles.

The museum is mostly manned by volunteers who are military historians, who look forward to sharing their knowledge and experience with guests of all ages.
