HUNDREDS of school places are being created in preparation for service children moving to Wiltshire this summer.

As part of the Army Basing Program, the school building project will see the launch of two new schools and expansions on already-existing sites, to ensure all new residents have somewhere to complete education.

Funded by the Ministry Of Defence, the school build programme will create an additional 90 early year places, as well as 750 primary school and 375 secondary school places.

Kiwi Primary and St Leonards Primary in Bulford, Avon Valley College in Durrington and Wellington Academy in Tidworth will be expanding, and the programme crated St Michaels Primary School in Larkhill and Wellington Eagles Primary School in Tidworth.

Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott, said: “After many years of preparation and planning we are now on the home straight and ready to welcome the service personnel and their families from Germany.

“We recognise the huge contribution, both economic and social, the military personnel and their families bring to the county and we are looking forward to welcoming them later this year.”

Mark Duddy, army basing programme director, said the team have been working closely with Wiltshire Council since 2013, and described providing school places as a "pivotal" part of the plan.

He added: "I am delighted that such progress has been made across Salisbury Plain to welcome the children back from Germany and those moving within the UK.”

Baroness Scott added: “Partnership working has been so important to ensure essential works are carried out and we are grateful to local residents for their understanding as those works have been ongoing."

All schools will be welcoming new students in September 2019, and Wellington Eagles Primary will open later in the autumn term while final remediation work takes place.

Pupils and parents are invited to an open day at the Wellington Academy on February 28, 4-6pm, and March 1, 10am - noon to find out more information.
