A "PASSIONATE" cook is looking forward to teaching Salisbury residents how easy it can be to create nutritious meals from basic ingredients.

Sandra Cassells from Winterslow will be bringing her cookery expertise to St Michael's community centre, Bemerton Heath, later this month, to teach the kitchen novice about meal preparation across four weeks.

The first session of St Mike's Basic Cookery Course will introduce participants to a basic recipe, which will then be built upon and developed each week.

The 62-year-old running the course said: "It's a really exciting opportunity, I'm very enthusiastic about getting started.

"I'm so passionate about cooking and people can think it's difficult to cook but it's not. I think it's important to know how to make good, nutritious family dishes.

"It will help give people those life skills, have a place to talk and have a really fun time."

Lasagne, pastries, pasta sauces and sweet treats are just some of the foodie ideas already put forward.

"These are the starting ideas anyway - once we get started we can see what people want," Sandra added.

"Hundreds of dishes can be made from two basic ingredients, it's just so easy to make things."

Ineta Zeile, St Michael's community centre manager, said: "Here at the St.Michael's community centre, we would like to create a synergistic support network for those Bemerton Heath residents who are facing hardship."

She added there are a range of projects happening at the centre including a community fridge almost ready to launch, that Sandra may draw ingredients and meal inspiration from, as well as advice sessions on social housing and dietary advice and a technology cafe.

Ineta added: "We would like to become a place where Bemerton Heath residents and those willing to cross the Wilton Road divide feel supported and empowered to make the most of themselves regardless of the circumstance.

"I’m very grateful to Sandra for volunteering her time and experience to help our local residents of Bemerton Heath learn new skills and enable them to cook nutritious meals on a budget.

"For those not used to cooking from scratch, Sandra will be there in our kitchen to show simple methods of using this food to create interesting meals."

The first cookery session will be held on Monday, March 18, for more information and to sign up email ccm.st.mikes@gmail.com
