STONEHENGE School pupils have returned from half term to a completed multi-million pound extension.

The £6.5 million extension at The Stonehenge School, Amesbury, opened earlier this week, providing an additional 24 classrooms with new technological equipment and larger glass panels to let in as much natural light as possible.

Additionally a reception decorated with murals celebrating ancient landmarks and wonders of the world makes up part of the new site.

Head teacher Nigel Roper described the development as "magnificent", adding: "There was a genuine sense of excitement when students walked into the building for the first time.

"It’s been probably the most momentous week in the school’s history and the investment in young people from Amesbury and the surrounding villages is cause for real celebration.”

The extension, built by Interserve Construction and funded by the Department for Education, was built in hopes to meet the increasing demand for secondary school places in Amesbury.

The formal opening ceremony for the school extension is expected to be Monday, July 1.
