THE Life of a Fovant four-year-old with a rare genetic condition that left him unable to walk and talk has been transformed thanks to a fundraising campaign.

Lucy Dunn launched the Love for Louis campaign back in August 2017 to initially raise £30,000 to pay for special therapy for her son Louis who was diagnosed with Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation when he was 16-months-old.

The fundraising for specialist treatment to help with Louis development will be ongoing and so far more than £40,000 has been raised which has gone to a range of sessions including hydra, music and physio therapy as well as sensory integration.

“He is incredible. He is just a different child, he’s getting so much stronger,” said Lucy.

“It is all just working out incredibly. He is just happy and so much more mobile.”

Lucy says the fundraising campaign has made a “massive difference” to Louis who has been able to start walking with the help of a walker.

And a year on from attending therapy sessions he has been able to stand for 18 minutes after initially only being able to stand for 90 seconds after his first one.

Lucy hopes through the campaign to also raise awareness about the need for more to be done to help support children with special educational needs and disabilities like Louis and more NHS funding for specialist treatments.

“He is just achieving so much, which is pushing me more and more,” said Lucy, who has now got a team of volunteers helping her.

Lucy says the support from the community has been”really good”, adding: “Lots of people have done a lot and are generally interested in how he is getting on.

“Anything they do helps me to change his life and get the therapy to help him become as independent as possible. Thank you doesn’t seem enough.”

The local community have been supporting the campaign by hosting coffee mornings, disco events as well as taking on other fundraising challenges.

Lucy was recently recognised at the Wiltshire Life Awards last month with the Carer of the Year accolade.
