POLICE are investigating a mass brawl involving more than 50 pupils from a Wiltshire school.

The Melksham Oak Community School's acting head Aidan Blowers has spoken to the parents of some of the pupils involved, and is working with the force.

The fight involved around 50 members of the so-called K1 gang, comprising Year 8 and Year 9 pupils from the school.

It is alleged they assaulted five Year 11 pupils, including two girls, in the Hawthorn Road area of the town.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We are investigating a report of a disorder involving a large group of youths which took place at approximately 3.20pm on May 2 in the Hawthorn Road area, Melksham.

“It is believed two groups of youths were involved and several are believed to have suffered minor injuries.

“Our enquiries are currently ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 101 and quote log number 204 of May 2.”

Parents have urged the school to get involved and tackle the behaviour of some of its 1,200 pupils.

Jacqueline Cooper, posting on a local social media site, said it was a very sad state of affairs, adding: “As usual, it’s the minority that give the majority a bad name.”

Melksham Oak’s interim principal Aidan Blowers said: “We were alerted to an incident in Melksham that occurred after school on Thursday and I met with the police straight away.

“I and my staff have also met and communicated with parents of some of the young people involved.

“We are supporting the police with their work and will continue to support them and our students moving forward.”
