A WEEKEND getting drenched in the New Forest kicked off Jeff Butt's love affair with orienteering 12 years ago.

Jeff, who lives in Woodfalls, had seen an advertisement for the activity at the Ringwood leisure centre, and thought he'd have a go.

"I did it in the wrong clothing and got absolutely soaked, but it was brilliant," he recalls.

His enthusiasm spread to his young family who took up the sport alongside him.

He qualified as a coach in 2002 and now spends most weekends in the country imparting that same enthusiasm to youngsters as a coach with Sarum Orienteering Juniors - which is where he was when his name was announced as the winner of this year's Sports Coach Award.

As well as Sarum Orienteering Juniors, Jeff also coaches regularly at South Wilts Grammar School where daughters Alice, who has just been selected for the British junior squad, and Lucy are pupils.

Pauline Giles of Martin, whose own three children are keen orienteers, had nominated Jeff for his endless energy, enthusiasm and patience, and the time he gave to all the juniors he mentors and coaches.

"He regularly transports the children to meetings, including overnight stops," she said.

"No matter how well, or not so well, each child runs, they receive the same wonderful support and encouragement, and always with an infectious smile."

Jeff was delighted at the news of his win. "It's brilliant to be recognised in this way," he said.
