THE lives of children at Hyde Primary School are enriched with music thanks to the hard work and dedication of Rob Dalziell.

He has composed music and written plays for countless school productions, often in his own time.

"It's a God given gift - I'm rubbish at other things, but good at this," joked Mr Dalziell.

"But it's lovely to be able to see the joy on the children's faces."

Two years ago, Hyde Primary won Spire FM's Song for Christmas competition with a carol composed by Rob, who first came to the school seven years ago volunteering his free time while teaching at Foxlease School, which is in Lyndhurst.

He would often spend Saturday mornings writing plays and composing music, until in 2003 he was diagnosed with cancer and had to take a break. As soon as he was strong enough, Rob carried on teaching and writing songs.

He now works at Hyde School one day a week and the other four at Foxlease School, and ensures any child who is willing to learn is given a chance.

And the children of Hyde School have loved learning and singing all the songs - so much so a CD was produced last year with all their favourite songs.

Rob was nominated for the People Awards because of his bravery, kindness, generosity and dedication.

He said: "I'm honoured, very surprised. I just enjoy what I'm doing.

"It was a major shock at first - I thought someone was joking, then I felt very humble, when I think I am alongside people who save lives."
