ARMOUR has been polished, lances have been sharpened, and noble steeds have been selected – now all that’s left is for four of history’s most legendary knights to set up camp at Old Sarum near Salisbury for a historic Bank Holiday weekend.

Jousts are always a popular fixture in Old Sarum’s summer, but this year English Heritage’s blockbuster event has been given a new, legendary twist.

Taking place over the bank holiday weekend tomorrow (Sunday, August 25) and Monday (August 26), the ‘Legendary Joust’ will see the armour clad knights compete to prove their superior power and impressive skills in a series of competitions.

Joust-goers will see lances shatter, feel the thunder of hooves and hear the roar of the crowd as reputations are won and lost.

Away from the jousting action, visitors will also be able to discover the sights, sounds and smells of medieval life – complete with merry music, a fire-breathing jester, and a thriving medieval encampment.

Inspired by the fantastic fighting knights, would-be young challengers can test their bravery in junior jousting and melees, and hone their skills with have a go archery.

Events manager Charis Abraham said: “In Medieval times each character was hugely symbolic. Seeing all four compete for victory will be a pretty unforgettable way to spend this bank holiday weekend.”

The event runs from 11am to 5pm. Visit english-heritage.org.uk for more.
