MEMBERS of staff and members at the Highcliffe Marriott Leisure Club have been told the company will be 'consulting on proposals' for its potential closure later this autumn.

In a statement Marriott said:

"We are currently consulting on proposals for the closure of the Leisure Club at Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel. This follows careful evaluation of the needs of the hotel in order to operate as efficiently as possible.

"If the club does close, members will be able to transfer their membership to another Marriott Leisure Club, provided that it is owned and operated by Marriott Hotels Limited and has sufficient capacity for new members. Alternatively, members can be refunded for any subscription paid for after the closure period. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

In a separate statement to Leisure Club members, hotel manager Mike Harrison said: "We are currently proposing a closure date on or around 6th October 2019 though this is subject to change." He also acknowledged it was a 'difficult time' for Leisure Club staff where five jobs would be at risk if the facility closed.

However, one angry club member, Sharon Bull, voiced fears that the proposed closure meant more fundamental changes at the prestige hotel, which was a favourite base for several UK Prime Ministers, including Margaret Thatcher, when they conferenced at Bournemouth.

"Whilst appreciating that running the facilities represent ongoing costs, it is well used by members, children's swim lessons and hotel guests," said Ms Bull, who is a health and wellbeing coach.

"What will take its place here or are they just closing the doors to the most amazing place to swim and relax in the area?

"Why is this not seen as a jewel in the crown of the Marriott group given its location and history?"

She said the wellbeing and leisure facilities should be protected from closure.

Currently the club's website says it has an indoor and outdoor pool, a gym and various classes.
