TWO BOURNEMOUTH food retailers have been rapped after failing food hygiene inspections.

Both East Howe service station and the Polski Sklep shop were given a rating of just 1 following inspections during July and early August and ordered to improve.

Officials who visited the Kinson Road service station found out-of-date sandwiches, which they described as 'high-risk food' on sale and that the cooler units were running at too high a temperature.

"Daily products must be made and out of date products removed," said inspectors. "It is not enough to rely on supplier checks."

They discovered the chiller was running at 11.2 degrees with a display temperature of 13 degrees. "Such products must be kept at below 8 degrees," they said. They also noted the lack of temperature recording which prevented any comparisons being made.

The station was ordered to make the food improvements immediately and also instructed to clean up its public WC area, including the basin and toilet pan.

BCP's Director of Communities, Kelly Ansell, said: "A food hygiene inspection was carried out at East Howe Service Station on 4th July 2019. The premises were found to be non-compliant in the areas of food hygiene and safety procedures and lacked management controls. A re-visit is scheduled.

"During inspections, officers provide advice and guidance to assist the food business operators to achieve compliance with the necessary food safety standards, including allergen information and food safety management systems."

Polski Sklep in Lansdowne Road was inspected on August 2. The food operators were found to be failing to comply with food hygiene and safety procedures due to no hot water being available for hand washing.

Inspectors said: "There is no suitable piped hot water to either the delicatessen or the wash basin." They noted that the store's chiller cabinet was two degrees above the temperature it should be and in addition said there was no evidence of any documented food safety management system.

"A revisit was made on the August 9 and hot water is now provided," said Ms Ansell. "Further improvements are pending and will be checked at a revisit."
