With the completion of the rebasing moves at the end of September, Aldershot has lost its claim to be the ‘Home of the British Army’.

Around Salisbury Plain is now stationed the armoured might of the Army beginning with its major headquarters, 3rd (United Kingdom) Division with its headquarters in Bulford.

3 Div is the only division at continual operational readiness in the UK. ‘The Iron Division’ is made up of 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade (Tidworth), 12th Armoured Infantry Brigade (Bulford Camp), 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade (Bulford).

A second divisional headquarters, 6th Division, is based at Upavon and is made up of ten specialist brigades based across the UK.

HQ 1st Artillery Brigade is based at Larkhill and there are now six artillery regiment within the garrison. Ist Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (AS90), 14 Regiment (a training regiment), 19 Regiment (AS90), 26 Regiment (MLRS & EXACTOR2) 32 Regiment (Desert Hawk UAS) and 47 Regiment (Watchkeeper UAS).

The Household Cavalry Regiment at Bulford is the divisional reconnaissance regiment with Scimitar and ARES and the Army’s only three Challenger 2 armoured regiments are at Tidworth, Queen’s Royal Hussars, King’s Royal Hussars and the Royal Tank Regiment.

There are four armoured Infantry battalions equipped with Warrior, FIRST FUSILIERS and 1 ROYAL WELSH Tidworth and 1 MERCIAN and 5 RIFLES in Bulford.

For support there are two Royal Engineer regiments at Perham Down, 22 and 26 Regiments and 3, 4 and 6 Armoured Close Support Battalions, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at Tidworth. They are joined by 1 Armoured Medical Regiment and 4 Medical Regiment, Royal Army Medical Corps at Tidworth.

3 Signals Regiment and 3 Regiment Royal Military Police are based at Bulford and elements of 15 Signals Regiment are at Perham Down. There are two Military Intelligence Battalions, 2 Bn based at Upavon and 4 Bn at Bulford.

There are three regional headquarters for administrative support, HQ Army South West and HQ Bulford and Tidworth Garrison at Tidworth and HQ Larkhill Garrison.

Salisbury Plain is now the Home and Heart of the British Army.
