PLANS for a new 'changing places' facility at Salisbury District Hospital have been proposed, offering patients with learning disabilities more access, space and care.

As part of Mencap's Activism Week, as well as the charity's ongoing Treat me Well campaign, the hospital has announced the plans for the addition to meet the needs of those with a learning or physical disability, providing them with a more dignified experience while onsite.

Different to a standard accessible toilet, the space is even more accessible with added equipment, space and comfort, for patients either with profound and multiple learning disabilities, or people with other physical disabilities including spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis.

Denise Major, deputy director of nursing said: "Health services can have a huge impact on the lives of the 1.5 million people in the UK who have a learning disability.

"We’re proud to be supporting Mencap’s mission and the changing places facility is just one of a number of steps we’re taking to improve care for these patients."

The new facility would be found on level 3 of the main hospital building.

Denise added: "We know that simple adjustments make a big difference. More time, better communication and clearer information can all help to make sure someone with a learning disability is treated well in hospital."
