On October 25, Old George Mall security staff were alerted to two men acting suspiciously in the mall.

The pair were seen breaking into Superdrug by kicking in a glass door. And once inside the shop, Chaney was seen to walk directly to the front counter and fill a bag full of perfume before leaving minutes later.

Ayoub walked directly to the medicine counter at the rear of the store.

When officers arrived on scene, Ayoub was located within the pharmacy area.

He was arrested immediately, while Chaney was located minutes later in Crane Street. The stolen perfumes were located nearby and seized.

Inspector Pete Sparrow said: “This case is an example of excellent partnership working between the CCTV operator and the local Community Policing Team which resulted in a swift response and arrest of the two offenders; one still inside the shop and the other nearby.

“The investigation was continued the next day by our police staff investigators ensuring we had secured and presented all the evidence that has led to this quick justice being served.

“Chaney in particular is a prolific offender and I’m pleased he has been given a custodial sentence – I hope this sends a reassuring message to our local community.”

Both have also been ordered to pay £149 surcharges.
