A MAJOR exhibition charting Warrington’s transformation from new town to new city in the past 50 years has launched.

The display is curated by Culture Warrington’s Janice Hayes and is on display across Warrington Museum and Library.

Janice, former heritage manager at the museum is now a volunteer, and has curated this exhibition alongside that of the work of Warrington artist Eric Tucker – which has hit the headlines across the country.

The new exhibition takes a look at Warrington’s history over the past 50 years; a journey that has taken the town from post-war austerity to 21st-century prosperity.

By delving into the museum and archives’ photographic collections and memories from Warringtonians themselves, this exhibition enables visitors to track Warrington’s transformation since its designation as a New Town in 1968.

New Town, New City is on display across Warrington Museum & Library until Sunday, February 9.

The exhibition will also be accompanied by a number of events and talks at the Museum and Library over the coming months.

Eric Tucker’s work first caught media attention last year after his family discovered more than 400 paintings at his home following his death last year.

Now, the artist’s first public exhibition has captured the attention of people right across the UK, with people travelling hundreds of miles to catch a glimpse of this fascinating collection.

Janice said: “We always had a feeling that this exhibition would be popular but we’ve been blown away by the response we’ve received from visitors and the national media alike.

“Eric’s work depicts a town and a way of life many of us will be familiar with so its cultural and historical significance cannot be underestimated.”

Eric Tucker: The Unseen Artist is also on show until February.

Meanwhile, volunteers at Central Library are also busy preparing for a new scheme launching in January.

LiveWire’s I.T Buddy Sessions present visitors with the opportunity to improve their technology skills with some hands-on, practical support from library volunteers.
