WORK to transform a disused church into a new and modern facility for the community of Sandleheath is well underway.

The trustees of Sandleheath Village Hall Charitable Incorporated Organisation that manages the village hall are raising money to convert the former St Aldhelm’s building into an up-to-date facility.

Trustee Mike Richardson said: “This is a most exciting and significant landmark in our development story.

“We are determined that Sandleheath gets the modern village hall it deserves, and the current building works take us much nearer our goal.

“We are creating a much-needed community focus, and in addition, our Refurbishment Programme will preserve the historic St Aldhelm’s building and reduce our impact on the environment.

“Seeing the builders there is hugely encouraging, and a testament to the generosity of our many municipal, corporate and foundation sponsors, and our individual donors.

“Our motto is ‘Let’s Make it Happen!’. Right now, we’re beginning to do just that.”

Having raised the necessary funds, full refurbishment of the building’s kitchen and toilet area is now in progress.

The work is being carried out by Ringwood-based company PWH Building.

The work includes a new roof, new internal configuration and new equipment, including disabled and baby changing facilities.

The hall’s trustees are now busy fundraising to renovate the remainder of the building.

Around £80,000 has been raised so far with around £180,000 still needed to fund the second phase of the refurbishment programme which includes repairs to the walls and roof; installation of wall, roof and window insulation; upgrading the floor; cleaning and sealing the floor and walls; and replacing the entire electrical system.

The trust is applying for more grants but says it would value donations from any organisation or individual who would like to see it achieve its goal in refurbishing the village hall.

The new facilities will be accessible by May 2020.

Meanwhile, the hall remains open and is still available for hire.
