AN unringed peregrine returned to Salisbury Cathedral last night, to lay a THIRD egg.

After laying the first on Sunday and the second on Tuesday, the peregrine that has been regularly visiting the nest located on the cathedral tower laid its third egg in the early hours.

The cathedral team cannot identify the bird as it is unringed, but say it could be the same female as last year that they nicknamed Fiona.

There are generally around three to four eggs in a clutch and incubation does not start until the last egg is laid, so the nesting pair will sit on the egg at intervals to keep the eggs warm.
