A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after being caught doing twice the speed limit in Salisbury.

Officers were patrolling the city centre at midnight when they became aware of a suspicious white Vauxhall Astra van.

The vehicle was seen to travel at double the speed limit through the city centre, swerving across the carriageway before driving off at speed onto the A338 Churchill Way East.

The vehicle was eventually stopped and the driver attempted to fight while officers restrained him.

A local man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving, resisting arrest, driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and possession of a controlled drug.

He was taken to Melksham custody where he remains for questioning.

Inspector Pete Sparrow said: β€œIt is disappointing to hear of incidents of this nature in our city.

"Driving in this manner could have caused serious injury to other road users or pedestrians which would have then placed additional demand on our colleagues within the ambulance service, at a time when they are already experiencing huge levels of demand.”
