SALISBURY Museum may be closed but a new online exhibition is launching – exploring 800 years of the city’s history.

Pick & Mix @pickandmixtsm is an Instagram exhibition developed by the museum team and launches on Thursday, April 23.

The ‘first’ for the museum, starts off with specially selected items from its own collections, but will go on to include those submitted by the public. The museum hopes that each of the objects will help tell a unique part of the city’s story and of the people who have lived in Salisbury.

The museum is also inviting people to send in a photo or video of a personal object or photograph that tells a story about Salisbury, past or present and add to the conversation.

This online exhibition is the first step towards redisplaying the museum’s History of Salisbury Gallery and forms part of the Salisbury Museum for Future Generations Project, which is being supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the wider community. The aim is to find out which objects or themes the people of Salisbury would most like to see on display in the new gallery.

The exhibition will include objects ranging from keys lost in Salisbury’s medieval drainage channels to the 15th century Salisbury Giant.

One of the items being featured is a pilgrim badge depicting ‘Our Lady of Tombelaine’, which dates from the 15th century and was found in the River Avon in Salisbury in 1987.

Learning and Engagement volunteer at the museum Kate Wickson, said: “Why does this little object only 57 mm high, mean something to me? It is an object imbued with layers of meaning. I love the charm of the workmanship. I also love its meaning. What impelled someone to travel from Salisbury to northwest France? To bring home this little piece and ensure peace and safety for loved ones, of course. A very apposite message.”

The museum is also inviting people to send in a photo or video of a personal object or photograph that tells a story about Salisbury, past or present and add to the conversation.
