Our photograph this week was presented to me by Wendy Butler who in 1987, opened ‘Anonymous’ hairdressing salon on the Estcourt Road in Salisbury. With its bright red exterior, I am sure this establishment lingers on in the memory of many readers?

Wendy learnt her trade at Blinkers joining the staff in 1982 but it was always her ambition to own her own shop – but not to rent! It was through her determination (and a good helping of charm) that she not only persuaded the local bank manager to provide her with a loan, but also became his hairdresser!

Eventually Wendy found a suitable freehold property in the Salisbury Journal covering three stories with a good number of rooms. Wendy moved in and let out all the rooms which helped to supplement the business early on.

“In those days we still had telephone directories so I called the salon ‘Anonymous’ as to be first in the directory” said Wendy, “some of my clients from ‘Blinkers’ supported me and another big plus was the car parking outside the shop.”

Indeed, Wendy realised that the writing was on the wall as soon as the council introduced parking restrictions and permit holders. She decided to move to new premises in Harnham in 2004 and now continues her business (still called Anonymous) from her home on the Coombe Road.

“My time on Estcourt Road is full of memories and everyone knew each other” said Wendy.

“When I opened my shop Stewart and Jean at the newsagent gave me their phone number and lots of encouragement. I also remember Nicholas & Harris the baker, Harrold Funeral Directors, Mr Newman the dentist, Rowland the Chemist, Petals Flower Shop, the Estcourt Road Post Office, David Ings Fruit and Veg, Brian Cowshall Music, Brian the barber and the list goes on. Looking back, the only remaining business from my time is the good old Wyndham Arms – and long may it remain….”
