SALISBURY'S tip will only be opening at evenings and weekends, the council has confirmed.

Residents will be allowed to use the site on their allocated postcode days from between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on weekdays, and 9.30am and 7.30pm at the weekend.

It will be closed on Thursdays.

Down the road, Amesbury's tip will also have different opening times to the rest of the county when they all reopen on Monday.

It will be open from 3.30pm until 7.30pm, Monday to Friday, and at the weekend from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Wiltshire Council says the reason for the odd opening times is due to businesses sharing the road, and a worry about queues impacting them.

The authority's waste chief Councillor Bridget Wayman said: “The household recycling centres in Amesbury and Salisbury are located on the same roads as, or next to, essential businesses that are open, and with additional queuing expected, we have taken the decision to limit their opening hours to help minimise the effect on these businesses.

“We apologise for the inconvenience, but we feel that opening during the weekends and evenings should help to reduce any risk of queues interrupting access to these businesses."

She added: “We expect all of our household recycling centres to be extremely busy during the initial phase of reopening, so please consider whether you really need to visit the sites during the first week or so, as there may be very long delays.

“People should also note the postcode entry system we have in place, which limits the days that people from each postcode area can attend any of our household recycling centres.

“We are keeping everything under review and will make any changes should we need to.”

As reported, on Monday nine out of ten of the council's household recycling centres will operate a postcode entry system which aims to limit the number of people on site at any time and to ensure social distancing guidelines are followed.

People will only be allowed entry on the days that correspond to the first part of their postcode.

For example, if someone's postcode starts in SP1, they can only visit the sites on May 19, May 21, and so on.

But the council says that people can visit any Wiltshire site they choose, so while people are limited by the days they can attend, they can visit any Wiltshire HRC on these days.

Residents are reminded to check the opening times and may be asked to provide a proof of address in order to use the household recycling centre.
