POLICE say a man died after getting into "difficulty" in the water at a Romsey fishing lake.

Three men and a teenager were originally arrested on suspicion of murder. The four, including a 34-year-old man from Salisbury and a 16-year-old boy from Salisbury, were detained following an incident at the three-acre Longbridge Lake, near Romsey.

But Hampshire Constabulary say, the man's death is no longer being treated as suspicious and all four were later released with no further action.

However, one of the men is being investigated in connection with an assault which allegedly took place during the incident.

A police spokesperson said the dead man came from Trowbridge in Wiltshire.

They added: "We were called at 2.31am on June 26 following reports of a 30-year-old man in difficulty in the water at Longbridge Lake, near Romsey. He later died at Southampton General Hospital.

"The four arrested on suspicion of murder were a 40-year-old man from Devizes, a 48-year-old man from Southampton, a 34-year-old man from Salisbury, and a 16-year-old boy from Salisbury.

"All four have been released from custody with no further action.

"However the 34-year-old remains under investigation for an assault in connection with the incident.

"The death is no longer being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner."
