Unusual cloud formations have formed above Basingstoke tonight after another day of sweltering temperatures.

In photographs captured by The Gazette's Camera Club members, large and distinct shapes were seen at sunset.

Similar formations were spotted in Swindon and described by a meterologist as a "beauty".

Tomasz Schafernaker, a meteorologist for the BBC, identified the Swindon cloud in a tweet, writing: "This is the qeeun of all clouds. Cumulonimbus Incus aka anvil cloud - what a beauty.

"A thunderstorm of seven miles high or more, with ferocious, often hurricane force updrafts in its core."

We have asked The Met office to identify the clouds seen above Basingstoke.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms tomorrow though it is unknown whereabouts they are expected to strike.

Locally, the forecasters predict rain in the afternoon in North Hampshire.

A spokesman said: "Some places are likely to see further severe thunderstorms, but with significant uncertainty in location and timing.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."
