A MAIN road into the city is closed for three weeks for major road works.
From today the A338 between the Britford Park and Ride and the Harnham Gyratory will be closed.
It will be closed until Friday, September 25 but not during weekends.
The closure is for "carriageway resurfacing and restructuring, road markings, adjustment of ironworks and associated works".
Local traffic and buses will have access via gatemen, and through traffic will be diverted via Blandford.
There have already been reports of traffic backing up in the city.
This is what happens in #Salisbury when you play around with the already over capacity roads. At 8.42am the people on this bus were making their way through Salisbury to the hospital. At 9.29 it was still in the same traffic jam. Now is the time for a bypass - nothing less. pic.twitter.com/HtOSOW07bB

The road was set to have been in "total gridlock" during this morning's rush hour traffic.
Total gridlock in Salisbury this morning due to closure of Downton Road. Perhaps a foretaste of the future that awaits when the city centre is blocked off? Make sure to sign the petition. https://t.co/ke4liZIVER #KeepSalisburyMoving #StopTheETRO pic.twitter.com/YUDCMiTqEq
