TESCO Extra in Salisbury is going to be providing free lunch bags for children during half-term.

The lunch bags will be available everyday between 12pm and 2pm in the community room at the Southampton Road store.

This comes after the government's refusal to extend free school meals during the half term break.

Inspired by the work of footballer Marcus Rashford, businesses in the city have come forward to feed children, who otherwise might go hungry.

Store manager Shaun Sennett said: "In store we wanted to get involved with the No Kids Go Hungry during half-term. We are providing free lunch bags everyday, Monday to Sunday, between 12pm and 2pm, for anyone that wants to come in store and pick one up.

"We do have a big community room here which we will be using. Customers can just come into the store and come into the community room so it is a bit more discreet."

Shaun says it was such a "great campaign" that the store wanted to get involved.

"We've also reached out to local smaller companies if they are supporting the campaign and need some ingredients we are more than happy to donate," he added.

"We like to get involved in different community projects across Salisbury. When this came up and we saw a lot of local businesses doing that we wanted to get involved."

In the past week, dozens of businesses in and around Salisbury stepped up to offer free meals to children this week.

These include home care agency There4U, The George and Dragon, Tinga, Inc and Kludo and Popeyes.
