THE festive season was launched in Amesbury yesterday when the town hosted its annual Christmas street market.

The town's Christmas lights shone brightly as shoppers snapped up bargains at more than 20 stalls that lined Salisbury Street.

Stalls sold everything from decorations to toys, ornaments, jewellery and plants - and local firefighters were cooking and serving burgers and hotdogs.

Stallholders, other helpers and shoppers alike sported Santa hats and some were even dressed in full Santa outfits.

Jonathan the Salisbury Jester also made an appearance along with other members of his Tabletop Circus, including Jolly Joe and Pixie Ice Queen (Pauline Gillespie) on her stilts.

Amesbury Town Band played carols and gleeful children cheered Father Christmas as he arrived in the town centre in his sleigh.

The Wednesday evening event was organised by the Rotary Club of Amesbury with proceeds going to local charities, including Wiltshire Blind Association, Children's Chance, Amesbury Stroke & Arthritis Clubs, Bulford Scouts and Rotary supported causes.
