A MURAL depicting the history of Gillingham Station aims to be completed by next summer, if a grant request of £13,000 is approved by South Western Railway.

Heard during the Gillingham Town Council’s general purposes committee meeting on November 2, it was approved that £3,000 would go towards the project which will enable the story of the station to be displayed, providing details from its opening in 1859 to the present day.

An application has been made to South Western Railway for £13,000 to help fund the mural, which will either be in the station itself or in Station Road.

Councillors were told in a report from Councillor Keith Wareham that talks had taken place with the Gillingham Local History Society, which will make a digitalised collection of photographs available for the project.

If the grant is successful then it is hoped an artist will be appointed by February and the design will be completed by May.

Once the Station Road mural project is underway there are also plans to erect a series of murals around the town depicting Gillingham’s history.
