THE M3 was closed for much of last night due to a police incident.
Hundreds of motorists were trapped due to the closure due to a reported crash.
The route has now reopened with a statement from Hampshire Police saying: "We thank those who were impacted by the incident for their patience and co-operation as we dealt with the situation."
According to the AA traffic news the incident was first reported at 4.43pm.
Tailbacks to Eastleigh were reported and drivers are asked to take alternative routes.
Traffic officers are warning drivers to take care, slow down and keep a safe distance in light of more heavy rain forecast today.
