A BARN containing sawdust, straw, farm vehicles and hay was on fire in the early hours on Monday.

At around 4.25am fire crews from Sherborne and Yeovil attended the incident in Lillington, near Sherborne.

A water carrier also attended from Yeovil, and the Somerset appliances left the scene at around 8.30am.

Other crews remained at the scene throughout the day.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The barn contained 300 tonnes of sawdust, 250 tonnes of straw and 200 tonnes of hay, as well as several farm vehicles, all of which were affected.

"Crews used hose reel jets and main lines to tackle the fire with the stop coming at 9.36am. Crews remained on scene throughout the day however, to monitor the contents of the barn as they burned out."

A spokesperson for Sherborne Fire Station added: "There is likely to be smoke and a smell of burning for several days.

"Local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed where possible."
