THE winner of the Salisbury Five - Votes For Women has been presented with an award.
Lady Jo Benson was awarded a trophy after coming top in a public vote.
Sir Christopher Benson, the husband of Lady Benson, said: “Salisbury is Jo’s life. Whatever else she has done Salisbury, its Cathedral and its family of people come first, especially the disabled and needy. She is so proud and delighted to receive this honour, a record of her love. Thank you all.”
In 1973 Lady Benson was awarded an OBE for her public services and has spent a lifetime dedicated to the betterment of others.
As Mayor in 1970 she instigated the Jo Benson Centre – a day centre for adults with physical disabilities.
Her involvement with the Cancer Research Campaign led to her becoming President of the Salisbury Branch in 1981.
The Salisbury Five - Votes For Women was part of this year’s Salisbury History Festival.
The public were asked to cast their vote for their favourite of the Salisbury Five - Florence Mildred White, Rosemary Squires, Secret Spitfire Girls, Lady Hulse and Lady Benson.
