MP John Glen has thanked the leader of Wiltshire Council for taking the "difficult and courageous decision" to suspend the low traffic scheme.

Earlier this month, the Salisbury MP had written to the council to ask for the People Friendly Salisbury trial to be put on hold on the basis it was "impossible" to measure the impact of the scheme during the current pandemic.

It was confirmed today that the scheme will be scrapped at the end of the month.

Reacting to the news, the MP said: "I am pleased that Wiltshire Council has taken the decision to suspend the scheme and would like to personally thank Cllr Philip Whitehead for taking this difficult and courageous decision having reflected and listened to local stakeholders.

"I remain firmly committed to seeing more walking and cycling in Salisbury.

"To achieve this we must have broad backing from local residents and make sure that any future experimental scheme is only implemented once the pandemic is over."

Cllr Mark McClelland, representing St Francis and Stratford on Salisbury City Council, is among those opposing the scheme.

He hailed the council's U-turn as "fantastic news".

"This is fantastic news for Salisbury. After many months of hard campaigning, it’s proof that local action can make a difference," he said.

"It is very welcome that Wiltshire Council has listened to John Glen, the BID and local people and taken this step.

"Salisbury City Council never voted in favour of this scheme and any new project must receive the support of the city’s elected representatives."
