THE owner of three hair salons which will be trading extra days to make up for lost income has warned that “dipping in and out of lockdown is no way to run a business”.

JAS Hair Salons will reopen today (December 2) after a four-week shutdown.

December is looking “very strong” due to customers booked in for November having rescheduled their appointments.

However, from a financial point of view, it’s impossible to fully recover.

Owner Jayne Prigent said: “December is always a good month and it will be a good month but we can only fit in so many customers.

“The business we would have had in November has gone, we don’t get that back.

“If you’re in retail you can sell more, but when you’re running a personal service there’s a limit to what you can actually do.”

Although hairdressers are allowed to operate in all tiers, there are concerns salons may close again if England was to enter a third national lockdown in January.

“I am concerned about it, it’s bad enough being in Tier 2 even though we can stay open and we can stay open in Tier 3 but going into lockdown in January would be awful,” added Mrs Prigent.

“Dipping in and out of when you can open is no way to run a business, I think this year staff have been off more than they’ve been in, how can you run a business like that?”

Last month, JAS hair group celebrated its 30th anniversary. Plans for a big party with around 200 guests at the Guildhall had to be called off but Mrs Prigent and the team managed to celebrate remotely and sent customers a bottle of champagne so they could join in the celebrations.

The salon team are keen to celebrate in style in 2021.

“I think in 2021 there will be celebrations whether you’ve done three decades in a business or whether we’re just celebrating because hopefully by the second half of next year we’ll be on top of the Covid situation.

“It is what it is, we can’t control it. We just have to take each month as it is and move forward, we’re a really positive thinking company and it can’t really get any worse.”

All three JAS hair salons in New Street and London Street, Salisbury and North Street, Wilton will be open on Sunday December 6 and Sunday December 13 from 10am to 4pm, on top of their usual Monday to Saturday opening times.

The salons will be closed from Christmas Day to Tuesday December 29.
