Floral tributes left at scene of fatal car crash in Westbury

Bethany Ovenden Gumm, 18, was killed on Friday night when the car in which she was a passenger struck a tree and a garden fence in Westbury.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old local man, was taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, together with an 18-year-old female passenger. Another passenger, a girl, 17, was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

By this morning, more than 80 bouquets had been left at the scene of the crash in The Mead, Westbury.

Letters paid tribute to Ms Gumm, "a truly beautiful soul" who was “loved by so many”.

One person wrote: “Although you are still here with me in spirit, there's always going to be a hole in my heart."

On Saturday, police asked those leaving tributes at the scene to abide by the coronavirus guidelines.

Insp Andrew Lemon said in a statement: "We completely understand how devastating this must be on those affected by this tragic incident and of course understand people want to come together at the scene to pay their respects and comfort each other.

"We want to make sure this is done safely and that we don't exacerbate the situation by spreading the virus so please try to bear in mind Covid restrictions and social distancing.

"We know this is a difficult and distressing time but we want people to try and remember social distancing to keep everyone safe, the last thing we want is for friends and family to become ill in the coming days.”
