ONE OF Dorset's oldest paperboys has and will continue to work throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Keith Fleming, 81, has been dropping his local newspaper on people's doorsteps for the past 10 years after deferring from retirement.

Mr Fleming, who turned 81 on February 28, works six days a week, delivering newspapers in Parkstone on his bicycle.

He delivers newspapers to customers during his two hours of work every day and is pleased he could continue with his work.

Mr Fleming said: "In the present climate, it's lovely that this is available for some customers, especially for those who are shielding. Some people wave at me just as I'm leaving through their garden gate.

"It may not sound much, but the delivery means a lot to those stuck indoors all day who don't have any contact with other people. You know they appreciate it.

"There have been days where it's poured in rain and I think to myself 'am I sane?' as it can be a little bit trying in that weather. But, being a paperboy is another dimension to my life."

Mr Fleming decided to apply for the role of paperboy 10 years ago when he was on the brink of retirement.

Remaining active and not getting under his wife Rosemary's feet while she continued to work pushed him towards the job.

Since that day, he "hasn't looked back or regretted it."

Mr Fleming said: "When Covid-19 came about 12 months ago, I did think about whether this is the right thing to do for my health, but I have no contact with customers or people in the shop, so I'm not putting myself at risk.

"I enjoy doing it so I will carry on until the time comes where my frame will be creaking a bit."
