Young singers needed for Cathedral's virtual performance

During lockdown, musicians from Salisbury Cathedral and Salisbury Cathedral School have joined forces to create a voice workshop for younger children that will culminate in the virtual performance of Philip Wilby’s lovely sacred song Make me a Light.

Any child is welcome to take part in the online workshop and performance.

Materials are available via the Cathedral website, and the workshop can be done at home with the family or as part of school lessons.

The session starts with vocal exercises led by Susie Lamb, the director of music at the Cathedral School, followed by a session with David Halls, the director of music at Salisbury Cathedral.

David Halls said: “We were incredibly disappointed when the Be a Chorister for a Day event had to be cancelled. It’s such an important introduction to the Cathedral and singing as part of a choir here. So, when the school came up with this idea, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved.”

Once participants have done the workshop, each child will be asked to make their own recording of the song and send it in.

Susie Lamb added: “We really hope loads of children will take part in the workshop and the song. I normally go out into local schools to run workshops like this, and we have a children’s community choir at the Cathedral, but none of that has been happening because of the pandemic, so we thought we’d try to get things going a different way. It’ll be lovely hearing all those voices ‘in’ the Cathedral and online.”
