A LANDLADY said that taking over a village pub felt like "coming back home", after her father was in charge of the same venue in the 80s and 90s.

The Radnor Arms in Nunton, which is currently closed alongside the rest of the hospitality industry, has been praised by one customer for its "feel good atmosphere" and "friendly, helpful staff", making it the Journal's latest pub of the week.

One nominator wanted to celebrate the little extras that make The Radnor Arms experience, including chocolate eggs with the bill and the team's knowledge of the food, drink and specials.

Louise Penny, landlady of The Radnor Arms, took over the pub three-and-a-half years ago, and said it felt "fantastic" to be recognised by the public, adding: "It's especially nice that people are thinking about us at the moment."

When asked what makes The Radnor Arms special, Louise told the Journal: "It's hard to talk about yourself in that way really. I'd say we're warm, friendly, and everybody is welcome. It's not known as a 'family pub' but it still has that family vibe. It's a pub that fits all the important categories."

This is not the first time The Radnor Arms has been in Louise's family however.

"I was actually born here [Nunton], my dad had [Radnor Arms] in the 80s / 90s, so when I was offered the job it was like coming back home," she said.

Describing the third current national lockdown as the "hardest one", Louise added: "This one has been quite painful because of the weather, but now it's getting warmer and closer to opening.

"When we reopen it's great - everyone comes back - and we hope this time it will be the same."

Adapting to the Covid-19 pandemic, the pub introduced a separate entrance and exit system, as well as additional sheltered seating outside and socially distanced tables.

The Radnor Arms plans to operate an outdoor service from April 12 - when it is hoped lockdown measures will begin to ease for pubs and restaurants.

The team has used the current lockdown to redecorate the pub, and Louise said she is looking forward to the return of customers.

She added: "We've used this time being closed as an opportunity to do the place up, we can't wait to come back."

Louise said one of her favourite memories during her time at The Radnor Arms includes a family fun day, as it showcased live bands and was "a big party, a fun day in the sun".
