Wiltshire's director of Public Health has explained how far people can travel following the new "Stay Local" rule this week.

From Monday (March 29), some restrictions that have been in place for nearly three months changed as Wiltshire and the rest of England comes out of lockdown.

Under Boris Johnson's four-step plan, people will be allowed to meet outdoors in groups of six - or as two households if that number exceeds six.

Director of Public Health at Wiltshire Council, Kate Blackburn, has urged people to stick to the rules and minimise travel.

She said: "The 'Stay at Home' rule has ended and has now been replaced by guidance from the Government that people should 'Stay Local'.

"To date, no formal guidelines have been issued by central Government to clarify what this specifically means.

"However, people should continue to minimise travel, avoid making unnecessary trips, combine trips where possible and should not be staying away from home overnight at this stage."

"Where people feel that travel is necessary, we are asking them to stick to the rules of only meeting outdoors and maintaining social distancing.

"People should not meet indoors with anybody from outside of their household or support bubble, unless they have a legal exemption to do so.

"Again, the take home message from this latest step change is that people should ‘Stay Local’."

Ms Blackburn added most Wiltshire residents have been "great at following" the rules throughout the pandemic, but urged the public to keep following the restrictions.

She said: "We would urge everyone to continue to be responsible when planning any journeys or meeting up with others, as we would not want to jeopardise the next steps of the roadmap and further easing of restrictions."
