THE occupants of a double decker bus converted into a motorhome had a lucky escape after a fire broke out in the early hours of this morning.
Fire crews from Amesbury and Salisbury attended the scene.
A post on the Amesbury Fire Station Facebook page said the occupants along with their dog escaped with no injuries.
The owner of the vehicle was alerted to the blaze after smelling burning plastic.
The Facebook post said: "The owner is unaware of the cause and she thankfully woke up due to a strong smell of burning plastic. The smoke alarms failed to activate.
"She then woke up her father who was sleeping upstairs before walking back down to large flames. They escaped along with their dog. Luckily there was no injuries.
"They had tried to use a extinguisher to fight the flames and other motorhome owners staying in the area tried to help with no luck."
The fire station says it took more than 14,000 litres of water to extinguish the fire and due to the rural location a water carrier from Andover had to be called to the scene.
As the post explains: "Due to this being in a rural location there were no hydrants in close proximity so we couldn’t refill water, our fire engine holds 1800 litres which soon gets used.
"A water carrier was requested to attend and assist with dealing with the fire, this was mobilised from Andover, this carries 10,000 litres.
"After the water carrier arrived we used a main line and hose reel to continue extinguishing the fire."
Firefighters managed to save some photos and memorabilia, which they say the owners were extremely grateful for.
The post added: "As well as losing all of their belongings and possessions in the fire they are having to come to terms with the loss of their beloved motorhome. It was formerly a double decker bus converted into a motorhome."
