A DEER attacked by a dog at a Hampshire beauty spot had to be "shot" after suffering two broken legs.

Photographers visiting Titchfield Canal yesterday morning in hopes of capturing some snaps of local wildlife bore witness to a distressing incident as a dog mauled a young roebuck.

A large black and white pointer has been photographed chasing the deer through the area and over a fence.

Witnesses say that despite best efforts they were unable to stop the dog in its pursuit, claiming that the animal's owner was "nowhere to be seen".

The dog is reported to have chased the animal, biting at its rump.

The deer was later found to have two broken legs and serious wounds.

Due to the extend to the injuries, the animal was put down by police.

Daily Echo Camera Club member David Luetchford has shared his images and anger in hopes of raising awareness of walking dogs through the countryside and the importance of good recall.

David said he "thought long and hard" before sharing the images, but did so in order to shine a light on the problem.

"This morning I witnessed what happens when people can’t control their dogs," he explained.

"Despite our efforts to get the dog away it continued to harass the animal.

"The owner of the dog was initially nowhere to be seen.

"I later found the poor creature that was still alive but with broken back legs and serious bite wounds on its rump.

"I called the police who responded quickly and came down and put the animal out of its pain.

"I am so angry and sickened by this and feel the issue needs bringing to attention.

"Keep you dog on a lead if you can't control it."

Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed they were called to the canal at 8.09am to reports of an injured deer.

They said: "Police attended and the deer was dispatched humanely by police to prevent any further unnecessary suffering.

"Officers will be making further enquiries and will be speaking with the dog owner."
