Two GP-led vaccination sites in Salisbury will close by the end of next week, it has been confirmed.

Clinics at Leaden Hall, in the Cathedral Close, and at Michael Herbert Hall in Wilton are scheduled to end by Saturday June 12.

The change follows a review of all the vaccination hubs currently up and running in the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire CCG area.

The idea behind the move is that as the vaccination programme reaches younger age groups, pharmacies will take a more prominent role.

The decison will also allow GPs and their staff to revert their focus back on their patients and surgeries.

June 12 closure

After Saturday June 12, those who haven't had their jab yet, or are waiting for their second dose, will no longer be able to book an appointment at Leaden Hall and Wilton's Michael Herbert Hall.

However, by the time both sites will shut, NHS staff say they hope they will have offered a second jab to all those in priority groups one to nine (from the most vulnerable patients to those aged 50 or over).

All the vaccine hubs that will remain operational after that will come up as an option on the national booking system, meaning people can select the venue which is most convenient to them.

GP-led sites, which patients could so far attend on an invite-only basis, will also soon be available on the national booking system for the first time.

The role of pharmacies

According to the local CCG, a number of pharmacies are due to start rolling out vaccines in the coming days and weeks.

Some, mainly in the Bath and north Wiltshire area, have already started.

However, a spokesperson from Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees the vaccine rollout locally, told the Journal that there are currently no plans for pharmacies in the city to administer Covid jabs.

That's because the vast majority of vaccinations are expected to take place at the large-scale site at City Hall, which to date has rolled out more than 70,000 vaccine doses.

The venue on Malthouse Lane is now offering the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine alongside AstraZeneca, which means it can also cater for people under the age of 40.
